It all started when I had just finished school, and I was exhausted. I dragged my tired feet and carried my heavy bag out of the school. “The weather is really hot!” I thought to myself as perspiration trickled down my forehead. Outside the school was a sea of parents waiting for their children. I squeezed my way through the crowd, shouting, “Excuse me!” every time.
Just then, an old grandpa in his late fifties, clad in a casual outfit, rode past me. A gust of wind blew against my face as I continued to follow the path home. “Crash!” Suddenly, there was a loud crashing sound in the distance, making me jump in fright. At first, I did not think much of it and continued walking home, enjoying the scenery.
Before I knew it, I was almost home. Suddenly, I noticed the faint shadow of someone in the distance. I craned my neck and strained my eyes to see what lay ahead. To my utter horror, it was the grandpa who had been riding the bicycle! Perplexed, I had no inkling of what was happening. “What is happening?” I thought to myself. As I strained my eyes even more, I noticed that the old grandpa’s fruits, vegetables and cans of food were scattered all over the floor.
The old grandpa looked around, trying to ask for help, but to no avail. Needless to say, all the passers-by ignored the poor grandpa and decided to walk away. It baffled me that nobody helped as the poor grandpa sat there in pain. “Excuse me, could you help me?” the old grandpa asked repeatedly.
“The gall of the passers-by not to help this poor grandpa!” I thought. I could no longer put up with it, and I knew I had to make things right.
Without hesitation, I rushed over and asked if he was all right. Tears streamed down his flushed face as he nodded his head in reply. I knelt on one knee and started picking up all the groceries that lay scattered all over the floor. I placed them into the plastic bag and tied a knot. I also placed the bag on the bicycle and slowly helped the old grandpa stand up. He thanked me continuously and said that what I had done was really kind and that I was a responsible child. I reminded him to ride slowly as I bade him goodbye.
That night, as I was tucking into the simply delectable fried rice that my mother had made, I smacked my lips in satisfaction, with the savoury taste bursting in my mouth with every mouthful. I decided to relate to my mum what had happened. Hearing what I shared, she placed her hand on my shoulder and praised me for helping the old grandpa who had fallen.
As I reflected on this entire experience, I could not help but beam with pride for having performed a kind act and helped an old grandpa who was in need of help. This entire experience will remain indelibly etched in my mind.
